Nebraska bandmasters praise Waverly's concert choir

Waverly Varsity Band performed at the 50th anniversary Nebraska Bandmaster’s Association, NSBA, at Kimble Hall Friday, March 4 for the first time in over 20 years.

The varsity band has been on a huge success streak this year, taking four out of the seven awards at state including 1st place overall. This success has brought a lot of attention to the band. So much so that the NSBA invited them to perform in their prestigious event as the only high school concert band there. While there, they were given another award from NSBA for playing at the event. The award was in recognition to being invited to NSBA after sending in a recording of the band. Waverly was selected out of 18 other bands throughout the state. Waverly hasn’t played for NSBA since their 25th anniversary.
NSBA is a collection of most of the band directors in Nebraska coming to listen to the best of the state.
“These people know what they’re listening for, so they’re probably the toughest audience the band will ever play for,” said Brady Rohlfs, Waverly High Schools band director.
“It’s different than playing for Mom and Dad who are going to clap even if the song falls apart. These people won’t. You’re playing for quite an elite audience,” Rohlfs said.
The stage had many guests during the performance. Helping direct the performance with Rohlfs were Jim Kucera and Bob Maag. Kucera is Waverly’s Middle School band instructor. Maag is a past band instructor at Waverly High School and past president to NSBA. Waverly District 145 Superintendent Bill Heimann presented a speech on how proud he was of the high school’s concert band.
NSBA was another achievement that most high school bands can only dream of on top of all the other achievements Waverly has in their history of success.
